Weber Genesis II E-310
The Genesis II E-310 is a good starting point to compare the new line to the previous versions. Both have 3 burners and both sell for the same price, $849 MSRP with a typical street price of $699. Older models were 3 main burners only. Genesis II is offered in 2, 3, 4 and 6 burner configurations.
Since the 1980s Genesis has been one of the most popular grills in the USA, appearing in backyards coast to coast. The Genesis II features Weber’s new GS4 grilling system, consisting of their Infiniti Ignition with an impressive ten year warranty, tapered-quadrangle shaped burners to replace tube burners, tried and true porcelain coated steel flavorizer bars and a new grease management system located under the center of the cast aluminum fire box. A slide out tray holds a disposable aluminum pan for easy clean up. Grates are porcelain enameled cast iron which will help the relatively low powered burners put some sear marks on meats. We’re still scratching our heads as to why Weber stopped offering sear burners for the new Genesis II models.
Weber recently purchased iGrill Digital Thermometers and all G2s are “iGrill 3 ready”. iGrill 3 is a four probe digital thermometer that can be monitored from an app on your smart phone. We’ve long been advocates of replacing obligatory, useless hood temperature estimators with accurate digital thermometers. Antique hood thermometers can easily be 50°F off. The iGrill 3 enables you to place one digital probe at the cook surface to dial up the correct oven temp, and one in your food to monitor internal meat temp.
The concept is a step in the right direction, but surprisingly, there is no read out on the iGrill 3 itself, so you need to use the app even when you’re standing at the grill. Check out Weber’s iGrill 3 video below that shows the installation on a standard Genesis II.
Genesis II has an open cart with left and right side shelves an LP tank concealer on the right. Tool hooks are built-into the side shelves and the LP models also include Weber’s “Precision Fuel Gauge” which measures the LP tank weight and shows your approximate fuel level. Natural gas models are available, but no conversion kits, so decide before you buy.
The slat bottom shelf is a throwback to the original Genesis models. There are two locking casters on the left and two large fixed wheels on the right.
The standard Genesis II are being made in China, while the Genesis II LX models are currently made in Palatine, Illinois. The jury is far from out as to what this means for performance and durability. We encourage our readers to keep an open mind and wait and see.
Warranty is 10 years for the cook box, lid, burners, ignition system, and grease management system, five years for the coated cast iron grates and coated steel flavorizer bars. All remaining parts are two years.

Modern Home Products (MHP) JNR 4
The JNR4 is the smallest MHP grill. Made with cast aluminum, it is practically indestructible. It will withstand harsh weather, abuse, and never rust. MHP owners love to brag about how old their grill is, how they never clean it, and especially how they never cover it. I remember these big black boxes on ground posts when I was growing up. Not having seen one up close since my childhood, I was struck by the old fashioned appearance. Whether they’re dated or classic is in the eye of the beholder. In the 60s this cast aluminum design was the rule rather than exception. It is still made by a few other companies like PGS right here in the USA. But you won’t find these at any big box store where almost every grill is steel and, more often than not, made in China.
The JNR4 passes a lift the lid and shake test with ease. The cast aluminum housing of the cooking chamber is thick and solid. The novel “Stay Kool” handle is a perforated stainless steel tube. It rolls freely within its side mountings as you lift.
Remove the grate and you’ll see notches on the front and back of the grill body which are built-in shish kabob skewer holders. Instead of metal flavor bars over the top of the burners, MHP uses “Flavor Master” porcelain briquettes which rest on a porcelain coated grate just above the burners. In the beginning, lava rocks were employed, but the smooth uniform shape of ceramic briquettes promotes even heat and allows gunk to burn off more effectively. MHP goes a step further by using kiln fired, porcelain coated briquettes. They believe this system provides more even heat, vaporizes drippings better than most flavor bars and, of course, will not rust as do most flavor bars. The bottom aluminum casting tapers toward the back to divert grease into a small stainless steel cup. However, MHP claims not much grease escapes.
All MHP grills present a variety of options. The JNR4 may be ordered with stainless steel rod cooking grates and warming racks, or “Sear Magic” grates. Sear Magic consists of two sided, reversible aluminum cooking grates. One side is ribbed for grill marks and the other is smooth. As the name indicates, they intensify heat from standard gas burners to sear while reducing moisture loss. They are similar to the popular GrillGrates, but not quite the same, and of course MHP came first. Our posted price is based on a basic JNR4 grill head mounted on a two wheel cart.
It has one large, 30,000 BTU stainless steel “H” burner that is effectively two burners fused together with two controls for zone cooking. Temperature range is 300°F to 550°F. The JNR4 has a single NuStone (faux stone) shelf or stainless steel fold down shelf. A side burner may be added. Available in natural or propane gas, it can also be retro-converted. Electronic ignition is battery powered. Most MHPs come with built in “heat indicators”. We do not like “heat indicators” and prefer you purchase a digital thermometer. They actually removed them for a period of time but then, bowing to public demand, brought them back with a higher quality device they claim to be accurate within 15 to 25°F.
MHP grill heads can be built into permanent installations or mounting on a variety of posts, columns, and carts. You can chose a 48″ aluminum post for in-ground installation or various columns and carts offered in aluminum, coated steel and stainless on wheels. Some have enclosures for a propane tank, some do not, but none have doors, shelves, condiment trays, etcetera, and none of these features are offered as extras. A stainless steel masonry enclosure for built-ins with a matching set of double doors is also available. All stainless steel carts, burners and grates are high grade 304 stainless steel.
For built-in installations, MHP offers some drawers, doors and a pull out trash compartment. Tools, shish kabob skewers, a smoke box, and other accessories are available. As for parts, these guys have been around since the beginning of gas grilling and many older models are still working in the field. They got parts. They even have a “Restore a Grill” section at their website.
The warranty is exceptional and testifies to stories of indestructability MHP owners are keen to share about their grills. Limited Lifetime Warranty on housings, control panel, stainless steel burners, cooking racks and Sear Magic Grids. 5 Year Warranty on IR burners and porcelain briquettes. 1 Year Warranty on igniter, gas valves, knobs, NuStone shelves and briquette grates.
If you like both low maintenance and durability, take a look at MHP, particularly the cast aluminum models. There are reasons the MHP warranty is so good and campgrounds and parks use them. They don’t come with a lot of goodies, they aren’t cheap and some may feel they lack curb appeal. But these cookers are time-tested, rock solid, versatile, and unique.

Char-Broil SmartChef TRU-Infrared 3-Burner
Smart cooking has come to your back patio with the Char-Broil SmartChef Tru-Infrared 3-Burner Gas Grill. The $800 grill has built-in Wi-Fi so that you can connect to the product through an app on your iOS or Android device. Char-Broil displayed its smart grill during the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago this past weekend. The company began to sell the grill in January.
Char-Broil’s entry into smart grills shows that manufacturers are beginning to pay attention to the needs of the high-tech outdoor cook, not just the kitchen of the home chef. We’ve seen a growing number of Wi-Fi enabled ovens, refrigerators and other kitchen appliances, but the we haven’t seen many connected outdoor grills. And Char-Broil’s smart grill is a more mainstream (read: inexpensive) option than the $7,000 Lynx SmartGrill, a Wi-Fi-enabled luxury gas grill we’ve tested that also responds to voice commands.
The SmartChef grill can solve a few problems you might encounter when you cook outside. New to grilling? You can enable a Guided Cook mode in which you select a recipe in the app and let it walk you through the steps of cooking your meal. Want to grill in the winter but hate to stand outside in the cold? The grill’s temperature probe will monitor your meat and send that temperature data to your phone via the Char-Broil app so you only have to go outside to flip your food and remove it when it’s done.
But the connected features of the SmartChef grill might turn off passionate backyard cooks who take pride in their grill skills. And the addition of Wi-Fi will hit your right in the wallet. The SmartChef is the most expensive gas grill Char-Broil offers — the next most expensive grill is $530.
- The app can monitor level of your gas tank
- LED-illuminated control knobs
- Two ports for plugging in a temperature probe
- Porcelain-coated grates
- Includes side burner to warm dishes or grill more food
- Electronic ignitor

Temperature range: Reflects how wide a temperature span the grill offers by comparing temperatures at the high setting and low setting using all the main burners.
